Yesterday, as part of my role as a Law faculty buddy-mentor, I went out with my mentees for lunch.
Prior to that I popped by what was ostensibly the international law careers fair...but what was really a Hong Kong law career fair...anyway I popped by and I was drawn to one particular firm...Jones Day...its an american based global law firm with a HK office and I made a connection with one of the partners they sent down on this particular recruiting drive and she asked me to put in an application for an internship. I'm wondering if I should do it or continue to hold out for a response from Bain & Co...which is really the sort of work I ultimately want to do (i.e. consulting).
The reason I mention this was because whilst talking to my mentees over lunch I realised that while I want to do consulting...being a lawyer is also something I like doing...it almost makes me feel like I'm torn between two worlds. It gave me a special kind of joy to be able to speak from experience..my first tedious year as a law student and to express the hope and joy that law, the study as well as the operation of it...brings to me every single time.
Which brought to mind this photo that I took during my University's orientation. I feel like consulting's the blue balloon....and law's obviously the white one...at the end of the day...they're pretty much just different shades of the same balloon...it really doesn't matter if I do consulting as a management consultant or if I consult as a lawyer or if I become a teacher (which is ultimately a form of consulting). I'd be happy either way. Sooo...I decided to wait till a couple more weeks for Bain to get back to me and then I'll reassess =D
Happy Hump Day to Y'all =D

Sounds like a very sound decision to me! If you are in no rush then just sit back and see what happens. It's when we rush that we sometimes make our bad decisions...just my thought. Best of luck Wayne!

@Jen: Thanks Jen! Yeah I'm sitting tight for the time being =D Sometimes part of me just wants to fastforward my studying experience and get to the point where I'm actually working....but even now, as in the army, its the training that secures the victory =D Have a great week!
Ok, I agree to sit back and give it time.... but just follow your bliss!
And Wayne, nice pic! It made me smile. There's just something about balloons - but with the shape of the balloons and the lines in the background... I don't know why but it makes me feel good. Fitting way to end my hump-day!

@amy: Hi Amy =D I like the perspective of the shot because of the lines which reach across the photo and direct the viewer to the balloons. I'm a sucker for photo gimmicks like that =D
I'm glad it brought you as much joy as it did for me =D
i know what you mean..i'm torn between the accounting side and the banking&finance side. i still cant decide.
intership's goooood! cant you apply for both and then wait for the offers to come and see how then? (gosh this sounds like lawwww. offer,acceptance..contracts..blahblahblah)

@treeeeesh: Hi Tricia! Thanks for the visit. The thing is I feel turning down offers is bad form especially when I'm an intern....and it would ordinarily be not an issue for me to apply to both firms for different internship periods but Jones Day's australian intake is in dec-feb and so is Bain & Co's...so I'm just going to wait for a bit to see what Bain thinks of me and then I'll readjust accordingly.
hahah i don't mean to say this but you cheaterbug! the blue one's commerce lah ehheh okae that's irrelevant but hello!

@yidiot: Hi Christine! Yes..the blue balloon ostensibly stands for the commerce fac but in the narrative of the photo, for me, at the time of writing it, it stood for something else i.e. the consulting desire in me as oppose to the law desire in me. =D
I didn't mean to sideline the commerce faculty in any way =D
haha... i'm pretty torn about wat i wanna study too... guess we'll have to take a little time. (:
