Singapore

I'm a Singaporean and I really try to be a model representative of my country. I'm proud of the fact that we've moulded ourselves to be something from nothing and I'm immensely grateful to be a Singaporean. I feel its pain when I see 'Ugly' Singaporeans both in country and abroad and the myriad other problems that affect the tiny red dot that is my home.

Anyway...this'll probably sound weird to most of you...but I have a tiny Singaporean flag that flies over my desk at all times...and when I was moving house, I made sure that it was the last thing to come down in my room. One of my most memorable moments in the army is during my time in officer school at the end of each day when a lone whistle blows to signal the flag lowering and in the orange glow of the setting sun, there falls upon the grounds a stillness and a silence as all motion grinds to a halt and everyone turns to face the flag whereever they are...and for that 45 or so seconds it takes to lower the flag, there's always that reminder, for me at least, why I fight for my country...and then the whistle blows once more signalling the resumption of all activity and the camp is once again filled with a common purpose.

It's always bitter-sweet to see a flag being lowered for the day but I look forward to when I raise the flag again in the new day next year in my new apartment.
