Oyako Don

Posted by Wayne (Melbourne, Australia) on 23 February 2009 in Food & Cuisine.

I cook whenever I'm stressed...and I cook whenever I'm happy...but lately I've been cooking more often out of the former as opposed to the latter - much to the benefit of my belly. I also happen to stress eat although that's no longer much of an issue ever since my friend En En had the brilliant suggestion of me switching to chewing gum. =D

Anyway...I prefer a katsu don over an oyako don but to make the katsu from scratch would've engendered more trouble than it was worth. I tried to make it in the way I like it best - onions that were soft, brown and had a strong umami taste to it and just the right amount of 'runniest' (is that even a word?) to them. And just for bonus points (a touch which a lot of Japanese establishments seem to leave out)...a sprinkling of nori on the top =)

A friend's cousin and his other housemate, who partook of it, seemed to have enjoyed it immensely so I can safely count this dish as a success.
